Changes to garden waste collections and the time residents need to have their bins out by is taking effect across Walsall from this week.
From tomorrow(Friday 29 November)residents are asked to ensure their bins are ready for collection by 7am rather than 7.30am with crews preparing to start their rounds half an hour earlier.
Walsall Council's Clean and Green team is introducing the new collection times to assist the movement of traffic on some of the borough's busiest roads. Other benefits will include the earlier return of the vehicles to the depot in Brownhills allowing additional time for essential repairs and maintenance to the vehicles ahead of the following day’s collections.
Councillor Mohammed Arif, portfolio holder for the environment in Walsall Council coalition, said: "We regularly review our collections schedule to see if there are ways in which we can make the service we provide more efficient.
"These changes are to allow the crews to collect from the busiest routes as early as possible to minimise disruption for motorists during the rush hour. The crews will obviously not be in every street or road at 7am but to assist us with the changes we would now ask residents to work with us and ensure their bins are ready for collection by this time.
In other changes the collection of brown garden waste bins is being suspended from the end of this month as winter kicks in.
The service has traditionally been suspended annually as the amount of garden waste generated by residents falls over the winter months. Collections will restart in the week beginning 31 March 2014.
Councillor Arif added: "Over the years residents have become accustomed to the suspension of the brown garden waste collection service during the winter.
"We appreciate some residents do continue to work in their gardens whatever the weather but we feel this number is limited and in these tough financial times we have had to consider the viability of running a garden waste collection service during a period of very low demand."
While the service is suspended garden rubbish can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Fryers Road, Bloxwich, and Merchants Way, Aldridge.
From 1 October to 31 March the sites are open from 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Fryer Roads is open every day except Thursday and Merchants Way is closed on Wednesday.
