Youngsters’ tree-mendous contribution to future woodland
Date Published : 01 October 2008
Young members of a Walsall environmental team will be able to play a vital role in creating a new area of woodland – by growing their own trees.
The Really Green Discovery Team, a club organised by Walsall Council’s countryside service, will be flexing its green fingers on Saturday 11 October 2008.
Youngsters will go on a ramble through Lodge Wood in Aldridge, search for various seeds from the woodland’s trees and learn how to germinate them, pot them up and look after them as they grow.
These trees will eventually be used to create a brand new area of woodland as part of the nearby Longwood coppice in Aldridge, for the benefit of future generations of wildlife and people.
Councillor Louise Harrison, Walsall Council Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “The Really Green Discovery Team holds some really innovative events for eight to 16-year-olds.
“The idea that young people can look after their own trees which will eventually form part of a new woodland will really capture the imagination. What a fantastic thing to be able to tell your friends.”
The Really Green Discovery Team meets on the second Saturday of every month from 10.00am until 12noon throughout the year, for a morning of indoor and outdoor activities in Walsall’s countryside.
There is a charge of £1.50 per child and anyone interested in booking a place or finding out more can contact senior countryside ranger Diana West on 01922 459813.
