Housing and homelessness

To support people with mental health problems the housing agencies and mental health services work in partnership to provide a variety of housing and support options to meet different needs. For more information go to the housing section.

Supported housing

Walsall's Mental Health Services has access to several different types of specialist supported housing for people with mental health needs, managed in different ways and with different staffing levels.

There are residential care homes whose aims are to develop living skills and encourage independence.

For people who are more independent, there are semi-supported homes where staff are available on site during the day but, are ‘on call' at night in case of an emergency.

For people who are homeless but whose mental health is stable; there is a specialist mental health provision in addition to the mainstream homeless projects provided by the local authority.

Support in your own home

Most people experiencing mental health problems live in their own homes but at times, need extra help getting and/or maintaining appropriate housing. The tasks of daily living like paying household bills, cooking and cleaning can sometimes seem too difficult and stressful.

To support people in their own homes the Mental Health Support Workers from the Community Mental Health Teams can provide day to day support as part of a range of services available.
