Sports Club standard

The aim of the Sports Club Standard (S.C.S.) is to improve the quality of the provision of sports clubs with a junior section within the borough of Walsall. The S.C.S. sets out the basic operating standards that a sports club within Walsall should have in place. The S.C.S. will be administered in conjunction with, but lies beneath Sport England’s Clubmark and equivalent National Governing Body (NGB) accreditation schemes for sports clubs. The criterion for achievement of the Sports Club Standard is in line with that of Clubmark (and equivalent NGB schemes).

The Sports Club Standard is generic to all sports where the National Governing Body uses Sport England’s Clubmark as part of their accreditation scheme; and also includes football. The S.C.S. applies only to voluntary sector sports clubs within the Walsall borough. (Clubs situated outside but close to the boundaries of Walsall with a high intake of members from within Walsall will be considered).

“Sport England West Midlands are supportive of the approach that Walsall Council have taken in supporting the development of their local clubs. In appointing a Club Development Officer and in pulling together the Walsall Sports Club Standard document, the Borough can actively assist local sports clubs in their ultimate aim of achieving Clubmark and their NGB accreditation” Sport England West Midlands (2005).

The S.C.S. enables, encourages and promotes progression towards Sport England Clubmark (and NGB) accreditation for Walsall sports clubs and sets criteria in the following five core areas:

  • Management of the Club.
  • Club Links and Partnerships.
  • Equity and Ethics in your Sports Club.
  • Member Safety and Child Protection.
  • Playing Programme and Athlete Development.

Consequently, it will improve participation in sport within the local community and develop interest from prospective volunteers by allowing the Sport and Leisure Development Services and its partners to promote clubs to the community in the knowledge that they are quality accredited.

It is imperative that young people are served well by sports clubs; with due regards to safety and well-being whilst in the care of adults; by encouraging them and older members to live a healthy lifestyle and to enjoy sport and understand its benefits; by enabling young people to make use of their leisure time constructively; and by developing the talents of its participants and to identify the most talented.
