Goscote Hospital Site

Background

The Regeneration Framework Study for Goscote Lane Corridor includes the redevelopment of Goscote Hospital site, located within the Blakenall Ward, approximately 3.5km north of Walsall Town Centre. The site is owned and occupied by Walsall Teaching Primary Care trust (Walsall TPCT) and covers an area of approximately 7.01 hectares. The site is bound to the north by residential properties and to the south by an adult learning centre, beyond which lies more residential development. Goscote Lane forms the western boundary to the site and the Wyrley and Essington canal forms the eastern boundary to the site.

All clinical operational areas on the Goscote Hospital site ceased on 30 April 2006. The majority of Trust staff affected by the closure were successfully deployed within the Trust itself or transferred with their ward to new accommodation at the Walsall Manor site.

Proposals for the redevelopment of the Goscote Hospital site include a number of healthcare and related buildings. Two of the current buildings will remain in operation, which include the Waldoc out of hours medical service and the Catering Production Unit. Two additional buildings are to be developed; Dementia Care Unit and Palliative Care Centre.

Recruitment

Housing 21 and NHS Walsall will be recruiting various staff to deliver services both at the Dementia Care Unit and Palliative Care Centre respectively. Some staff will be required to have a high level of skill and competence to deliver dementia, palliative and end of life care, and others will be in a more supportive roles.

The private public partnership between Housing 21 and the council to takeover the running of existing residential care home service has led to the transfer of approx 400 existing staff to Housing 21. Recruitment of staff for the Dementia Care Unit may therefore be minimal. Any positions that are available will be advertised locally towards the end of 2009.
