Children with disabilities

The Walsall Resource Centre is a joint funded project between Walsall Social Care and NCH. Its aim is to promote and enhance the quality of life for disabled children and their families who live in the Walsall area.

The Walsall Resource Centre provides a wide range of services. These services are provided either within the centre itself, the child's own home or the community. This may involve working on a one to one basis with the child, with the family or with a group of children and young people.

Examples of services we provide:

  • Assessment and care planning and case management
  • Information and advice
  • Carers assessments
  • Home support service, including sitting service
  • Leisure Link (enabling individual young people to access leisure provision
  • Leisure Options (enabling small groups of young people to access leisure provision)
  • After school clubs
  • Saturday Clubs
  • "Jigsaws" (Sunday group sessions for children with complex health care needs)
  • Stay and play / toddler groups
  • Sibling support group
  • Play schemes / Activity days
  • Youth groups
  • Inclusion play sessions
  • Parent / carer's support groups
  • "STEPS" ( Group for young people with Aspergers)
  • "Buddy Scheme" ( enabling young children to access local play provision)

A lot of this work takes place outside of normal office hours, for example on weekends, in the evening and in the early morning.

The staff team

In order to provide this wide range of services the project has developed a diverse team of managers, social workers, family support workers and project workers.

How do I get services from the centre?

At the resource centre, we have eligibility criteria. This means that when you get in touch with us for help or someone gets in touch on your behalf (this is a referral), we will set up a meeting to talk to you about what your needs are (this is an assessment) and make a decision about whether you are eligible to receive our services.

Referrals

Anyone can refer a child or family to us for help. However, it must be clear that the parent and young person (if appropriate) have given their permission.

The project team are available each afternoon, Monday to Friday to take referrals and respond accordingly. This may involve providing information and advice or putting you in touch with another more appropriate agency.

Assessments

Within 24 hours of receiving a referral, a member of the team will make plans to meet the child and family to do an assessment.

We will arrange a home visit with the family also meet with the child. From this meeting the worker will decide with the family who else should be involved in providing information to help with the assessment. This may include Health, Education and any other agency or person involved with the child.

After completing the assessment the centre worker will discuss with the parents and child what services could best meet their needs.

This may include services offered both by the centre and other services from other agencies, including the social care department.

If it is decided that the child or young person is eligible for services from Walsall Resource Centre, the family will be given information on the services available and offered an information pack.

The pack includes:

  • Project Leaflet
  • Equal Opportunities Statement
  • Children's Rights Charter
  • Child Protection Statement
  • Parent's Information Leaflet on accessing Groups
  • Consumer Rights

We will also monitor the services to make sure they are still meeting the needs of the child and the family.
