Thousands of supporters joined in the celebrations as Walsall Council staged a civic reception to mark a year of success for Walsall Football Club.

Scores of fans lined the route from Bescot Stadium to the Council House in Lichfield Street.

In a historic occasion Richard Money’s team held the Coca Cola League Two trophy aloft after being presented with the silverware by Walsall Mayor Councillor Barbara McCracken.

She said: “What a wonderful achievement for the team but where would they be without the fans?

“This is a tremendous moment for Walsall Football Club and for the people of Walsall.”

More than 3,000 supporters were on hand to witness the presentation in front of the Council House before the players and staff of the club took part in a Civic reception hosted by the Mayor.

Antonia Pompa, Walsall Council events and festivals co-ordinator, paid tribute to all those supporters who had played their part to make the celebration a success.

She said: “It was an amazing sight to see Lichfield Street turned quite literally into a sea of red and white with so many smiling faces. As an occasion this was a real knockout success.

“This was an unbelievable day which I know that many people won’t forget in a hurry. The spirit of the crowd was good natured as we knew it would be.

“It’s a testament to our staff that such an occasion could have been planned, and executed with our friends at Walsall FC at very short notice. All those who helped make the day a success should give themselves a pat on the back.”

The occasion further builds on the close ties the authority and the club enjoy, she added.
