Right to read

Right to Read aims to improve access to books, reading and library services for looked after children and young people.

Looked after children and young people often under achieve and there are many reasons for this. They may have had lots of moves and changes of schools in their lives. They are often unhappy and distressed by what is going on around them and may have concerns and worries quite unknown to children living with their own families. They may have difficulty making friends and settling in new situations. Above all, we may have low expectations of looked after children and, in return, they often have low self-esteem and a mistrust of adults.

Birthday Book scheme

We run a Birthday Book scheme which encourages children to choose and buy their own books. We look at ways of improving our services to looked after children so that they do not feel left out or excluded. We work closely with Social Care and Education Walsall
