Cyclist training
Cyclist training courses for young people are offered in all Junior and Primary schools in Walsall. The training consists of two hour long basic skills course which is equivalent to Level One of the new National Standards for Cycle Training.

The training takes place off road and aims to develop the necessary skills to control a bicycle and to make short stops on quiet roads or cycle tracks.

The following are the essential outcomes of the course:
- Carry out a simple bike check
- Get on and off the bike without help
- Start off and pedal without help
- Stop without help
- Ride along without help for roughly one minute or more
- Make the bike go where they want
- Use gears correctly (where bike has gears)
- Stop quickly with control
- Manoeuvre safely to avoid objects
- Look all around, including behind, without loss of control
- Signal right and left without loss of control
Young people who have completed the course receive a certificate and a letter home.
To be eligible for a course, a young person must:
- be able to ride a bicycle in straight line without wobbling;
- have a roadworthy bicycle of an appropriate size
