Youngest ever Deputy Mayoress for Walsall

Walsall’s youngest ever deputy Mayoress, fifteen-year-old Abigail Pitt, will be an ambassador for young people in Walsall and help ensure the borough’s youth will have a voice in building a better borough.
Abi, who attends Pool Hayes Community School, was asked by her dad Councillor Melvin Pitt, the new Deputy Mayor, to take up the official role – and she was only too happy to help to boost pride in the borough and help local organisations.
Councillor Pitt and the new Mayor Councillor Barbara McCracken will be sworn in during the Mayor making ceremony in the council chamber at 6pm.
Abi is currently studying for her GCSE’s and her favourite subjects are history and drama, the keen dancer also regularly attends disco and ballet classes.
Councillor Melvin Pitt said: “Abi will be an ideal choice for Deputy Mayoress, as despite her age she is very mature, she also loves meeting new people and learning about new and different organisations.
“She will have a lot to offer Walsall and will help promote the borough and the views and opinions of young people.
Abi added: “I am very excited and honoured to take up this special role. One of my main aims during the year will be to pass on the views and opinions of other young people, it is so important that these are heard and acted on.
“I am really looking forward to meeting lots of people and hearing about the wonderful work they do in the borough.”
Councillor Pitt also attended Pool Hayes Community School. Headteacher Jim Clarke said: “This is such a wonderful opportunity for Abi, this will be a real platform for her and her development.
“It offers the scope for Abi to be a role model to other teenagers and for her to learn more about the relevance of local government and citizenship.
“She has the backing of the school.”
