Palfrey Park

Palfrey Park is significant local landmark and is cited as one of Walsall Council’s flagship greenspaces and the first in the borough to achieve the national Green Flag Award in 2007.

The Park is located within walking distance of Palfrey Town Centre and its Broadway West entrance is located off Broadway West (A4148 Walsall ring road).

The original park was opened in 1886 and extended in 1924 to cater for the rapidly expanding urban development and need for open space to provide active and passive recreation for the surrounding areas.

The park has a simple reverse L – shaped layout and is an intimate open space of approximately 6.48 hectares ranging from a formal historical layout in the north dominated by the recently reconstructed historical bandstand and Palfrey horse sculpture to the play and sports facilities at the centre core of the park, large amenity grass area to the south and informal nature conservation area in the south west corner of the park.

The park you see today has been carefully developed by Walsall Council in partnership with the Palfrey Park Friends and Users Association as part of a five year restoration and regeneration programme (2002 – 2007) which has both restored the parks historic landscape and regenerated its facilities to provide a park to meet the current and future needs of the diverse local community.

This successful transformation of the park and the achievement of the Green Flag Award has come about as a result of a successful 12 year partnership between the Friends Group and Walsall Council.

Palfrey Park offers a wide range of high quality facilities and features to cater for varying interests and reasons for visiting the park.

From informal recreation enjoying the public art features and relaxing in the fresh air, to organised health walks and the many community events and activities, from a leisurely game of bowls to a choice of active sports that can be played on the refurbished sports courts, from a picnic and play in the refurbished play area to live music in the new bandstand to pond dipping and enjoying wildlife in the conservation area, the park provides opportunities for all of the local community to enjoy their local park.

The park plays host to a varied programme of community events and activities including an annual fun day, concerts in the new bandstand, Love Your Park days, sports tournaments and festive celebrations as well a providing an outdoor classroom for local schools and groups to learn about their environment and local wildlife.

The long term management, maintenance and development of the park is guided by a ten year Management and Maintenance Plan which was produced in November 2006 and updated in December 2007. The Management and Maintenance Plan sets out the council’s vision and aims for the park and how these will be achieved.
