Leather Museum

Originally built as a factory in 1891 the building is now a working museum providing

  • fascinating demonstrations of leather craft where pupils can talk to retired leather workers
  • guided walks both inside and outside the building around the 'leather quarter'
  • traditional displays
  • a meeting room for class based activities with staff from the museum

The museum offers a range of stimulating activities for schools linked to the National Curriculum and the topic based International Primary Curriculum supporting a wide range of curriculum subjects.

Object investigation activities provide the starting point for many topics and provide cross curricular links to a variety of subjects.

Leather working is an exciting vehicle for many topics and we have many resources for linking the work of the museum to the curriculum which includes

  • Local History
  • Victorians
  • Civil Wars
  • Stuarts
  • Romans
  • Saxons
  • Vikings
  • Toys of the Past
  • Mask making- Greek and Egyptian masks of Osiris and Anubis
  • Famous People
  • Exploitation,
  • Materials
  • Fashion

Benefits

We work with all key stages including pre-school children developing their literacy skills and offer work related learning for older students.

We are very flexible and highly skilled and will tailor activities and talks to  meet the needs of teachers.

The museum provides a safe environment with a gift shop, adequate toilet facilities, a safe drop-off point outside the museum and the opportunity to combine a visit with Walsall Museum, the New Art Gallery or Walsall's Greek inspired townscape tour for school parties.

Admission to the museum is free and much of what we offer to schools is free too or provided at a nominal fee in some circumstances for specific activities.

Come along and see. For a pre-visit guide to the museum and a discussion about the activities available to schools please contact David Mills.
