Jobs for young people
Walsall Council recruits solely on merit. We advocate age diversity throughout our workforce and, with the exception of a very small number of positions that have age related occupational requirements, we ensure that our recruitment policies exclude age prejudice from employment decisions.
Age prejudice usually stems from stereotypical thinking associated with younger and older workers, such as:-
| Older workers are: | Younger workers are: |
| Unable to grasp new ideas | Unreliable |
| Coasting to retirement | Not likely to stay |
| Difficult to manage | More interested in their social life than work |
These negative perceptions are not supported by Walsall Council. We acknowledge that presently we are under-represented by young people in many service areas within the organisation and are taking positive steps to improve this situation, including:-
- Ensuring that all recruitment decisions are based solely on the applicants ability to do the job
- Developing e-recruitment facilities to attract applications from young jobseekers
