Stray dogs

From  06 April 2008 Walsall Council will be responsible for receiving and kennelling all stray dogs found within its boundary.

Previously the West Midlands Police Stations in the borough accepted dogs also but this responsibility has ended.

If you have a stray dog Monday to Friday during office hours (08.30 – 17.00) please call 01922 652210 and we will deal with your enquiry.

If you find a stray dog outside these hours please call 01922 650000 and the operator will advice you what to do.

The dog warden service is not responsible for:

  • dogs of people taken into hospital or care.
  • prisoners dogs.
  • re-homing unwanted dogs (although advice may be given by the dog wardens).
  • dogs of evicted tenants.
  • dangerous dog incidents (unless the police call on the council to assist in catching the dog).

There is presently no service outside of office hours to collect dogs that are roaming.

Sunnyside Kennels

Sunnyside Kennels

Sunnyside Kennels is where the dog wardens take all stray dogs found in the borough.

Stray dogs are a nuisance and can also be a danger to the public. It is an offence to allow your dog to wander the streets unattended, as there is a possibility of them causing accidents, attacking a member of the public or another dog, or fouling in a public place.

Every effort is made to respond to all reports received regarding stray dogs on the same day as they are reported.

Calls received after 16:00 hours will however, be actioned on the following morning. This is because the kennels, which are contracted by the service, close at 16:45 hours and it would be impossible for the wardens to transport any dog from the borough’s boundaries in time.

The dog warden service does not operate an 'out of hours' service.

Dog warden patrols

Routine patrols are undertaken on a daily basis in an attempt to either seize stray dogs or to establish ownership or where the dog lives. Seized dogs are taken to Sunnyside Kennels, Dark Lane , Coven near Wolverhampton city.

If you confirm ownership of a dog, which may have been collected by the service, your first actions should be to contact the kennels on 01902 790618.

Re-homing service

The dog warden service does not provide a re-homing service but it will assist an owner seeking to re-home a pet whenever possible.

Reuniting seized dogs with their owners

On collection of your dog you will be required to pay all kennelling, veterinary costs, along with a fine of £25.00 payable on collection.
