Apply for a vehicle licence
To apply for a private hire or hackney carriage vehicle licence, you need to contact the Licensing Office to arrange an appointment to process your application. The following documents will need to be completed:

When attending your appointment, you must bring with you the following documentation:
- The Vehicle Registration document V5 (copy acceptable)
- The current application fee
- Your Meter Calibration Certificate (if applicable)
- Your SVA Certificate (if applicable)
- Your Tail Lift Certificate (if applicable)
- .LPG Conversion Certificate (if applicable)
- Fire Extinguisher
- First Aid Kit
If you forget any of the above items when you attend the licensing office to make your application, your application will not be accepted and the vehicle will not be considered for testing.
New Applications
When you attend your appointment you will be given a bracket to be permanently fixed to the rear bumper of the vehicle. A £25 bracket deposit fee is required, refundable (by cheque) on return of the bracket. The flexi plate bracket must be permanently fixed to the rear of the vehicle:
If the vehicle passes the test you must attend the Licensing Office to be issued with your licence. You must ensure that you bring the following documents with you:
- Valid Insurance document
- Application form completed by Walsall MBC Vehicle Tester
- The current licence fee
Once the vehicle has passed the relevant vehicle test you must licence the vehicle no later than 5 working days following the test. Failure to do so will require the vehicle to be retested.
A vehicle MUST not be used for Private Hire/Hackney Carriage purposes after testing unless the licence has been obtained.
If you wish to cancel a pre-arranged appointment you must do so at least 48 hours before the scheduled test time. Failure to do so will result in you being charged for a missed test. Payment will have to be made before another appointment is made.
