Walsall's weekend grit operation
Date Published : 21 December 2009
Vehicles for Walsall Council spread 80 tonnes of grit to help keep roads moving in icy weather.
Sixteen routes have been covered as temperatures fell and remained below zero all weekend.
Council and Tarmac staff, based at Cable Drive, Walsall, have worked through the weekend.
Gritters were called out at 5pm yesterday and at 8pm on Saturday. Outside of these hours council staff have been monitoring the weather 24 hours a day.
However, grit will be spreadat a list of known problem areas including the Black Country Route and Pinfold Lane in Walsall and Willenhall Market Place.
Glyn Oliver, Walsall Council traffic and transportation service manager, said: "With temperatures plummeting across the country there have been some real difficulties.
"However, we are pleased that our partner Tarmac and our staff have worked so hard to keep roads moving.
"As we have said before, our roads are our lifeblood and it's important to tens of thousands of people every day.
"We would advise people to drive with caution and leave extra braking space from the car in front."
