Absence - Walsall College Fine Art HND Show at The New Art Gallery Walsall

Dates Tues 01 – Sun 06 July 2008

These works are a documentation of processes, engagements and at times personal struggles that truly reflect a generational point of view of a world which too many has lost direction.

Martin Fogg’s work is based on a collection that his father left him when he passed away and is a commemoration of his father’s death. The beer mats which will be on display were placed back into the pub environment where his father was taking beer mats from giving him this collection. The questions on the back are questions that Martin thought he’d ask his father if he were alive now because when Martin was a child he felt too immature to know these answers, but feels able to understand them now.

Gurbaksh Mahal’s work explores absence through process of revealing the effects of presence and the relinquishing responsibility as a creator. She is seeking to challenge people’s preconception of what constitutes absence through the use of sound.

Rob Randle will be displaying Choice LTD a collection of works that delves into a theoretical analysis of what choice is, within our personal lives and our structured society. From the options presented to us, to the decisions we make, they are all contrived from a pre-existing event or experience. Choice as a theory, presents an element of personal opinion and preference. It also exists as something vast and incredibly varied in the things it offers. But when presented in a consumer/materialistic context, choices then become limited to whatever it is the minority of others decide to provide.

Richard South will be presenting a collection of digital works which invoke a problem. This problem is a paradox, a potential state of equilibrium between creation and destruction with in a digital medium. The choices that he made to destroy the video are the choices made to create the work and he questions how this process could be automated and what happens to the artwork if there is no longer an artist?
