Merrions Wood

An appeal is being made for willing volunteers to help clear overgrown pathways at a Walsall nature reserve.

The Friends of Merrions Wood are meeting up at the end of this month to cut back holly bushes.

Once overgrown shrubs have been removed from the nature trail around the Great Barr woodland it will be easier for visitors to explore.

Volunteers are being asked to help out in some  - or all - of the clean-up session on Thursday October 30 from 9.30am until 12.30pm.

Councillor Louise Harrison, Walsall Council Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “The Friends of Merrions Wood is open to anyone who is interested in looking after and enjoying this wonderful nature reserve.

“Even if someone literally has just a few minutes to spare to come along and help this would be most welcome.

“Volunteers will be given secateurs and loppers and the work isn’t strenuous. It’s a great way to meet new people, get some fresh air and exercise and do your bit for the environment.”

Anyone interested in taking part should go along to the Skip Lane entrance of Merrions Wood off the A34 Birmingham Road.

They need to wear stout shoes or boots with a good grip, suitable outdoor working clothes and gardening gloves if possible.
