Triple boost for libraries comes step closer

Date Published : 22 June 2006

Plans for a triple boost for libraries by Walsall Council are ‘on course’ as part of a £1 million improvement package.

A new library is being planned for Bentley, Bloxwich library is set to be refurbished by April next year and Forest Gate library is due to move into a new home in the Square in New Invention in the autumn.

The plans come after a new library earlier this month opened in Brownhills as part of the £3.7 million Parkview Centre  at the former Town Hall building in Chester Road North

Sneyd and Furzebank libraries, which are both based in schools, will stop serving members of the public on July 21.

Residents have been reminded that they can still use their cards at libraries across Walsall as well as at mobile libraries.

.Councillor Louise Harrison, Walsall Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “There are an awful lot of improvements planned for libraries in Walsall. The future is bright and this is an exciting time.

“We are having major work carried out at three libraries in the area. This is on course. The changes will see a massive improvement in the long term and to ease any disruption in the short term we have our fleet of mobile libraries.

“We made the announcement about these changes earlier in the year when we set out the £1 million plan to improve the library service.

“What we are doing now is setting out more about what will happen to reassure communities who use these libraries. Disruption will be kept to a minimum.”

Both Sneyd library at Sneyd Community School in Sneyd Lane and Furzebank library at Willenhall School Sports College, Furzebank Way will continue giving a tailored service as school libraries.

The popular Booktucker trail teenage reading group is set to continue at Furzebank library with contacts with Primary schools set to be maintained.

Mobile library stops include on Mondays in Mossley at Margam Terrace from 9.50am tp 10.15am every Monday and Tintern Crescent from 10.20am to 10.35am. On Tuesday, the service visits Queen Street, Mossley from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
