Model citizens have their say on planning

Model for planning

Young people have been hands on in having their say on Walsall Council’s design standards for new buildings and green spaces across the borough.

They have been using a model community to put forward their views before officers produce a design guide – to help planners make decisions on the area’s future.

The model was built in a partnership between Walsall Council and the West Midlands Planning Aid Service – which offers independent advice on town planning matters.

Councillors, officers and young people met at the New Art Gallery to discuss what were considered good and bad designs and how to make the area more attractive.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Young people hold the key to unlocking the potential of Walsall.

“This was a hands-on way for young people to express their likes and dislikes about the design of buildings and spaces.  It is very important to get people involved in the planning process because decisions can be made that effect a community for generations to come.”

Councillor Andrew also signed the Planning Aid Concordat at the event, confirming the commitment of the council to support West Midlands Planning Aid Service.

Walsall Council is seeking the views of residents about what the unique characteristics of Walsall area before producing its design guide.

A questionnaire for the guide will eventually be made available on the council’s web site – www.walsall.gov.uk.
