Hundreds of visitors to the Streets Alive festival have voted the event a soaraway success with calls for something similar to be staged every weekend, delighted Walsall Council leisure chiefs said today.

The international festival opened with a colourful procession on Friday August 8 and ran on Saturday August 9, with journeys as its theme.

It ran again on Friday and Saturday August 15 and 16 with the theme of dinosaurs and organisers are delighted with the feedback that people have given.

Councillor Louise Harrison, Walsall Council Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Some of the shows held as part of the second leg of Streets Alive were attracting between 500 and 600 people – a fantastic figure.

“The opening procession proved really popular and, although bad weather on Saturday August 9 meant some parts of the programme had to be rescheduled, people told us they had a whale of a time.

“The workshops and performances last Friday and Saturday were tremendously well-attended and the weather held, bar an odd shower.

“Visitors have told us how much they enjoyed themselves and many asked if Walsall could stage something similar every weekend which speaks for itself.

“I would like to thank all the organisers and artists involved who helped make Streets Alive 2008 a success.”

Events, including dance displays, a treasure hunt, acrobatics, the chance to make a giant dinosaur and shadow puppet shows, were held in Civic Square, Park Street, Gallery Square and the New Art Gallery.
