Laughter is the best medicine so the saying goes and a film crew is finding out that when it comes to enjoying a giggle Walsall folk are just the tonic.

Chuckery Working Men’s Club, the Church at Junction 10 and the Age Concern Restaurant have all played a part in the Channel 4 Three Minute Wonder film due to be broadcast next month.

Nick Hillel, managing director of Yeast Culture which will be filming in the town, said the broadcast would feature Ethiopian Belachew Girma, the unofficial world record holder for non stop laughing, and locals enjoying a chuckle.

“Walsall people have a great sense of humour and they will help us put over the message that laughing is really very good for you,” said Mr Hillel.

Walsall Council leader, Councillor John O’Hare, said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished film and watching the happy, smiling faces of Walsall people featured.”

Sheila Harris, stewardess at Chuckery Working Men’s Club in Lincoln Road, said:
“We are all really chuffed that Walsall has been chosen for this film.
“We definitely enjoy a good laugh.”

Judith Palfreyman, catering manager at the Age Concern Restaurant in Lower Hall Lane, said: “Our customers have always got a smile on their faces and Walsall is full of happy people.”

Steve Joseph, from the Church at Junction 10 in Wolverhampton Road, confirmed that members of the congregation would be working with the film crew.

“Walsall has a lot going for it and its people deserve to be shown in a positive light,” he added.

Belachew Girma prides himself on having an infectious laugh – a mixture of guffaws, cackles and giggles – and holds the unofficial world record for laughing non-stop for more than two hours.

The Three Minute Wonder broadcast goes out just before 8pm on Channel 4.
