Countryside

Wherever you are in Walsall you’re never far from a countryside site or green open space.

Within easy reach of Brownhills High Street you’ll find a nature reserve at Shire Oak Park, a country park at Clayhanger Common and an area of rare heathland known as Brownhills Common – right next door to Holland Park one of Walsall’s many traditional town parks.

Two miles north of Willenhall town centre you’ll come to Rough Wood Chase which includes one of the largest areas of oak woodland in the West Midlands. Head south of the town and you’ve got Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve, one of the borough’s most important wildlife wetland sites, and just a short stroll from Willenhall Memorial Park.

Travel ever further south to Darlaston and you’ll discover another fascinating Local Nature Reserve – Moorcroft Wood. This site is now as important for wildlife as it once was for coal and iron ore.

Walk from Walsall town centre, through the famous Arboretum to Hay Head, the first of three charming stretches of woodland nestling in acres of farmland. Continue on into The Dingle and Cuckoos’ Nook with its carpet of spring flowering bluebells.

Hay Head Wood is bordered by a vast area of green space known as The Airport – no prizes for guessing this site’s former use. From here follow the flight of the kingfisher along the canal which meanders through more farmland to Park Lime Pits. This oasis of lakes, woodland and wildflower meadows is just a mile from busy Rushall Square.

If you’re in Aldridge or Pheasey you’re only a short distance from one of the highest points in the region – Barr Beacon. Take a stroll to the top and you can see for yourself Walsall’s great outdoors!
