The Department for Transport now recognises that the Brownhills Transport Package has been identified as a regional priority.
Following discussions with the Department for Transport, Walsall Council in consultation with Lichfield District Council and Staffordshire County Council, is reviewing the scheme to address issues and identify a scheme that is deliverable. Once a way forward has been identified it is planned to hold a Public Consultation which will form part of the planned re submission of the whole scheme for approval to the Department for Transport. As part of the consultation process we will endevour to notify all local residents, traders, councillors and key stakeholders when plans are available, and give each party ample opportunity to comment on them. This is likely to take place during 2007.
Walsall Council has developed a transport project to support the regeneration of Brownhills and address a number of long-standing problems:
- Inefficient transport routes through the area and poor links to the M6 (Toll) motorway
- Traffic congestion and large volumes of through traffic in High Street. This is environmentally intrusive, presents a barrier to pedestrians, and is bad for the economic vitality of the town centre
- Severe traffic congestion at the Shire Oak junction
- Unreliability of bus services caused by traffic congestion
- Through traffic in residential streets
- Poor access to Brownhills town centre
- High numbers of road traffic accidents
These problems are likely to worsen in the future.
The Brownhills Transport Package comprises three distinct elements that work together to address these problems and support the long-term regeneration of the area:
- Brownhills Eastern bypass (currently being revised)
- Brownhills town centre improvements
- Clayhanger link
