Red Route proposals for A34 North

Walsall Council are proposing plans to implement a Red Route along the A34 north of Walsall following on from the success of the Bloxwich High Street workshops and public consultation. Plans have now been developed for the rest of the length of the A34.

The purpose of the consultations is to obtain your views on the proposals so that we can finalise our plans ready to carry out the works, this leaflet gives you a brief overview of the aims of the Red Route scheme.

What is the aim of the scheme?

The section of the A34 north of Walsall is an important arterial route to and from Walsall that is heavily used by both pedestrians and road users.

The aim of the scheme is to control the movements along the route by using Red Route enforcement which will enable the traffic to move more freely and decrease the journey time for road users and increase safety for pedestrians.

What are the proposals?

The measures proposed as part of the Red Route Scheme are:

  • Replacing existing ‘yellow line’ waiting restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement.
  • Increasing the number of parking, loading and disabled bays both on and off the A34.
  • Providing better enforcement to eliminate illegal stopping and parking, making more efficient use of road space to improve traffic flow and journey times.
  • Major Junction Improvements to Hospital Street junction (completed) and Leamore Lane
  • Improved pedestrian facilities along the length of the A34
  • Improvements to the Bus Stop facilities and locations along the route.

Which roads are affected?

The Red Route scheme will follow the whole of the A34 north of Walsall town centre. The first phase of the scheme was the completion of the junction improvement at Hospital Street/Old Birchills/Green Lane. Red Route proposals were consulted on back in March 2007 for Bloxwich High Street and the next phase involves the rest of the length of the A34. This will run from the boundary with Staffordshire down to the junction with the A4148 Town Centre Transport Package. The Red Route restrictions will be applied to both sides of the carriageway. The plan on the back page of this leaflet illustrates the area that will be affected by the proposals.

Major works

From 11 February 2008 a major scheme of works for a duration of 24 weeks is due to begin along the Birmingham Road.

These works will temporarily impact the traffic management within the area and as a result the following will apply:

  • For 12 weeks the section of Birmingham Road from the junction with the Broadway (A4148) to the junction with Sutton Road/Lysways St/Springhill Road will be made one way with traffic only able to travel towards Walsall Town Centre.
  • Traffic which would usually use the above section of Birmingham Road will be diverted along Sutton Road and The Broadway.

This one way system will allow the upgrade or relocation of varios utility company equipment.  We aim to have the normal traffic arrangements restored as soon as possible.
