Red route proposal for A454 Wolverhampton Road

October 2008

The A454 Wolverhampton Road Red Route scheme has now been forwarded to Detailed Design. The revised proposals will now be drawn to construction specification. The Detail Design process will be complete by January 2009. The plans will then be subject to an independent Road Safety Audit ‘Stage 2’ to ensure the designs meet the required safety standards.

Please view the final proposals by downloading the plans below:

An additional proposal has been added to create nine ‘off-road’ parking bays outside the WHG Flats. This is the old entrance to the subway that has now been filled in. It has been identified that there is sufficient space to create parking spaces for the residents along Wolverhampton Road. The proposals are currently in a mini public consultation. Please view the letter and the drawings sent to the WHG flat occupiers below:

September 2008

The preliminary stage of design is now drawing to an end. The revised plans are now subject to a road safety audit to ensure the proposals are achievable and meet the required safety standards.

Minor Amendments

  • The Cottage pub has been purchased by a private buyer and therefore will not be redeveloped by the council into residential parking.
  • The proposed new parking bays outside of Mann’s Carpets have been taken out. The parking restrictions outside will remain the same. Loading for 20minutes only.

June 2008

Walsall Council is proposing plans to implement a Red Route along the A454 Wolverhampton Road. The proposals are being developed and include identifying the local needs for the area. The Council would like to seek the views of those local to the area including residents and traders’ views on the proposals.

The purpose of the consultation is to obtain your views and ideas so that we can finalise our plans ready to carry out the works.

Aim of the scheme

The Wolverhampton Road section of the A454 is a strategic route that connects the town centre to Junction 10 of the M6 motorway. It is heavily used by vehicles at all times of the day.

The main aim of the scheme is to control movements along the A454 Wolverhampton Road by using Red Route enforcement which will enable the traffic to move more freely and decrease journey time for all road users.

Proposals

The measures initially proposed as part of the Red Route scheme are:

  • Replacing existing ‘yellow line’ waiting restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement.
  • Improving the Advance Directional Signing along the whole of the Route
  • Improving Lining/Road Markings along the Route
  • Enhancing the whole route by laying new consistent restrictions that are clear and easy to understand.
  • Introduction of dedicated loading parking areas with improved lighting and security.

The scheme proposals also comprise of junction improvements at:

  • A454 Wolverhampton Road – Alumwell Road
  • A454 Wolverhampton Road – Lane Avenue
  • A454 Wolverhampton Road – Primley Avenue
  • A454 Wolverhampton Road – Bloxwich Lane

Roads affected

A454 Wolverhampton Road

The Red Route Scheme will follow the length of the A454 Wolverhampton Road from the M6 Junction 10 and continue east to the junction with Pleck Road.

The Red Route restrictions will be applied to both sides of the carriageway. The plan shown below illustrates the area that will be affected by the proposals.
