Along with the red route lining and enforcement, we are looking to:
- Where possible, remove the current Saturday parking restrictions as feedback from public consultation deemed this unnecessary.
- Maintain the Monday to Friday peak parking restrictions along the length of the Broadway to ensure that traffic can flow freely.
- Introduce a parking bay outside the Arboretum between the Park Tavern public house and Princes Avenue to accommodate for visitors to the Arboretum.
- Introduce a shared use footway for both pedal cycles and pedestrians between the Park Tavern public house and Princes Avenue.
- Introduce a coach drop off point near the Park Tavern public house for joint use by visitors to the Arboretum and school bus services.
- Introduce a crossing refuge near the Arboretum extension car park.
- Introduce dropped crossing provisions on all four arms of the Crescent Island.
- Widen the south bound exit lane of the Sutton Road island to accommodate for two lanes of traffic flow.
- Instruct the red route traffic wardens to enforce the ‘no parking on the verges’ traffic regulation order along the length of the Broadway.
- Create a direct path to the Arboretum crossing point near to Princes Avenue.
- Introduce an off peak 20 minute loading bay outside the properties of 11 to 17 Broadway North.
- Reduce the height of the vegetation around the exit to the Park Tavern public house.

Walsall Council is proposing to implement Red Routes within the Borough as part of the West Midlands Local Transport Plan along the A4148 Broadway North.
The proposals for the Red Routes network in Walsall are being developed and discussions with local people will form the basis of the consultation process. The purpose of public consultation is to obtain your views on the proposals so that we can finalise our plans ready to carry out the works.
What is the aim of the scheme?
The A4148 Broadway is an important section of the strategic road network in Walsall which is heavily used by a variety of road users.
The aim of the scheme is to control the movement along the route using Red Route enforcement which will enable the traffic to move more freely and decrease the journey time for road users whilst also increasing safety for pedestrians.
What are the proposals?
- Replace existing ‘yellow line’ waiting restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement.
- Provide better enforcement to eliminate illegal stopping and parking.
- Make more efficient use of road space to improve traffic flow and journey times.
- Review pedestrian crossing facility along the A4148 Broadway North.
Which roads are affected?
The Red Route Scheme will follow the whole of the Broadway that encompasses Walsall town centre. It is proposed that this Red Route is implemented from the Arboretum junction to the A34 Birmingham Road roundabout.
The Red Route restrictions will be applied to both sides of the carriageway. The plan below illustrates the area that will be affected by the proposals.

How do you have your say?
As part of the development of the Red Route proposals along the A4148 Broadway North, Walsall Council is planning to hold a series of public consultation events.
The Council is keen to ensure that the proposals developed for the A4148 Broadway North take account of all the needs and demands currently imposed on the network, and that they are sufficient for future user requirements.
Red Routes aim to improve both the efficiency and safety of traffic movements along the corridor with specific proposals tailored to the needs of the local area whilst ensuring that key traffic routes continue to operate effectively. There is considerable scope within the introduction of Red Routes to accommodate the needs of local businesses and residents.
We would like to invite you to the public consultation for the Red Route Scheme along the A4148 Broadway North. The current proposals will be displayed in the Centro Bus:
