Red route proposal for A4148 (TCTP)
Walsall Council is proposing plans to implement a Red Route along the A4148 as part of the Town Centre Transport Package (TCTP). The proposals for this Red Route are being made available to members of the public at two public consultation events to be held in August and September 2007. The Council is keen to obtain your views and would welcome members of the public to these events where staff will be on hand to answer your questions and address any concerns.
What is the aim of the scheme?
The TCTP Red Route will form an important section of the strategic road network in Walsall which is heavily used by a variety of road users. Prior to the work commencing on the TCTP 12 hour traffic flow counts indicated that more than 25,000 vehicles were using this section of the network.
The aim of the scheme is to control the movement along the route using Red Route enforcement which will enable the traffic to move more freely and decrease the journey time for road users whilst also increasing safety for pedestrians.
What are the proposals?
The measures proposed as part of the Red Route scheme are:
Replacing existing ‘yellow line’ waiting restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement.
- Providing better enforcement to eliminate illegal stopping and parking,
- Making more efficient use of road space to improve traffic flow and journey times
- Introducing a new pedestrian crossing facility on the A454 Wolverhampton Road
Which roads are affected?
The Red Route Scheme will follow the section of the TCTP to the west and north of Walsall Town Centre. It will commence at the junction of Rolling Mill Street and continue north towards the Pleck Road/Wolverhampton Road junction. Along this section of the route it is proposed that the Red Route enforcement should also be extended a short distance along Bridgeman Street and Moat Street.
From the junction of Pleck Road/Wolverhampton Road it is proposed that the Red Route will continue along Wolverhampton Street to the junction with the Crown Wharf Retail Park, the length of Blue Lane West and Court Way with enforcement also in place on Green Lane on approach to the the junction with Blue Lane and Court Way.
The proposals also include Strafford Street from the junction with Littleton Street West to the junction with Day Street , continuing along Day Street, Littleton Street West, Littleton Street East to the Arboretum junction. Along this section of the route, it is proposed that the Red Route enforcement is extended a short distance along Lords Drive and Hatherton Street.
The Red Route restrictions will be applied to both sides of the carriageway. The plan shown below illustrates the area that will be affected by the proposals.
