Highway maintenance in Walsall

Traffic in WalsallWalsall Council is a Highway Authority, which is empowered under the Highways Act 1980, to maintain the roads within the borough to an acceptable standard. At present the council maintains approximately 856 kilometres of highway, the exception being the motorways within the borough. The Highways Agency are responsible for all motorways and trunk roads. To enable a programme of repair works to be derived a detailed inspection is undertaken to ascertain the defects of every road.

A programme of works is produced, from which works are undertaken, the worst being done first. The council has to work within a cash limited budget, which means that not all major work can be undertaken each year.

The council does, however, endeavour to keep the highways in a safe condition whilst awaiting major works. You can report defects to us, these will be inspected and made safe within 24 hours. Any permanent repair will be done within 28 days where practicable.

By calling the Contact Centre on 01922 653344 or by email transportationservices@walsall.gov.uk you will be helping the council to ensure safety on the Highway network. This line has a team of trained staff to assist you with the report during normal working hours. Calls made out of normal working hours on 01922 650000 will be directed to the out of hours team.

When contacting us to report a defect please ensure that the exact location and type of defect can be identified to enable a speedy response.

When major resurfacing works are to be undertaken, details of any traffic problems will be identified, and passed to the local press for publication, details are also made available on the Council's web site. Where these works are in progress, it is appreciated if you follow the Highway Code and be patient if delayed.

Highway Maintenance Strategy 2009/2012

Walsall’s Highway Maintenance Strategy 2009/2012 has been designed to direct and inform in detail service users and those involved in service delivery about the way in which Walsall Council intends to maintain its highway network over the next three years. Particular emphasis has been placed upon service delivery improvements and how strategic intentions will be realised through the asset management process strategically, tactically and operationally.

The strategy forms an additional part of the Highway Asset Management Plan (Appendix G).
