Brownhills Transport Improvements

Introduction

High Street, Brownhills

Walsall Council has recently begun reassessing potential proposals for Brownhills High Street.

We are hoping to secure Red Route Package 2 funding to make improvements to the High Street.

To enable us to incorporate the needs, concerns, opinions and ideas of the stakeholders and residents of Brownhills we held two design workshops in April/May 2009.

The design workshops are the first stage in the development of proposals and have been successfully used for the following schemes:

  • Bloxwich High Street – Red Route and Route 301 Bus Showcase scheme
  • Caldmore, Walsall – Route 404 Bus Showcase scheme
  • Walsall Wood High Street– Red Route scheme

The workshops help us to understand the needs of the local area and identify what is most important to the people who use Brownhills, and in particular those living and trading along Brownhills High Street and the immediate surrounding areas.

Why are we proposing to do this scheme?

As Brownhills sees regeneration with a new Tesco and various housing schemes, it has been identified that the transportation situation in Brownhills needs to be reassessed.

What are the proposals?

At present we have no firm proposals for Brownhills. We are still in the early stages of preliminary design.

In April and May 2009 workshops were held that created two distinctive transport improvement options for Brownhills. Traffic models are currently being produced for the two different traffic flows. The modelling will determine:

  • what the impacts are likely to be for each option,
  • the implications each option may have on the wider geographic area, and
  • whether the proposed changes in traffic flow are successful.

The modelling work is expected to be completed by the end of September 2009.

Following the completion of the modelling work, and after working with those involved in the workshops, the council will be finalising proposals to take to public consultation.
