Brownhills Environmental Strategy

Brownhills

During Spring/Summer 2008 we asked residents, businesses, visitors and property owners of Brownhills to put their views on how millions of pounds of investment should be spent to take their town firmly into the 21st century.

Walsall Council together with Brownhills Project Reference Group (PRG) appointed consultants LDA Design who developed the Brownhills Environmental Strategy.

The Strategy will be used to inform forthcoming decisions made by the council on development schemes, transportation projects and other initiatives in the study area. It also recommends a programme of environmental improvements to support the delivery of the vision for Brownhills. The Strategy signals changes for the town’s streets, homes, shops, transport and public areas.

The public were invited to view the draft visions for Brownhills. The public were then asked to comment on the draft visions, highlight current issues affecting the area, suggest potential future improvements and how the area should be regenerated by completing the accompanying questionnaire. The consultation events proved very popular and it is estimated that the draft visions were viewed by approx. 2,500 people. These events were:

  • 5 February 2008, 10am to 8pm at Tesco, Silver Street, Brownhills
  • 6 February 2008, 10am to 5pm at Brownhills Library, Park View Centre, Chester Road North
  • 7 February 2008, 10am to 8pm at Tesco, Silver Street, Brownhills
  • 11 February 2008 to April 2008 at Brownhills Library, Park View Centre, Chester Road North

The outcome of the consultation showed a preference for Vision B - Brownhills as a Canal District Centre.

Draft environmental schemes for Brownhills

LDA Design consultants focused the Environmental Strategy on environmental schemes that are deliverable within the short/medium term and aligned with the longer term vision of Brownhills as a Canal District Centre. LDA Design identified a number of sites in the study area, ratified by Brownhills PRG on 11 March 2008, and prepared draft design briefs and/or sketch schemes for deliverable environmental schemes.

The public were invited to view and comment on the draft environmental improvement schemes from 19 May 2008 to 30 May 2008. The consultation events were:

  • 19 May 2008, 10am to 6.30pm, Tesco, Silver Street, Brownhills
  • 20 May 2008, 10am to 6.30pm, Tesco, Silver Street, Brownhills
  • 21 May to 30 May 2008, Brownhills Library, Park View Centre, Chester Road North

The comments gained through the consultation event were used to produce the final Brownhills Environmental Strategy, which was approved by the Brownhills PRG on 8 July 2008.
