Housing 21 Extra Care Unit, High Street
The brownfield site of the former 1965 Waine House (14 storey block of flats), located to the eastern end of High Street, is to be redevelopment by Housing 21 for a 60 Apartment Extra Care Unit with associated facilities.
Housing 21 work with social services and health authorities to deliver day care and home care services from sheltered and extra care housing, maximising the use of schemes for the benefit of the whole community.
Public and community consultation took place with the residents and the relatives of the exisitng residential care homes between October and Decemeber 2006. The proposal was promoted to the local community at Walsall Housing Groups consultation day on 16 October 2007. The proposal was presented to the Brownhills Project Reference Group in April 2008.
The scheme not only provides flexible, up to date, accommodation for the elderly of the area but also encompasses facilities that can be used by the whole community, created through flexible communal spaces within the development. The scheme will contain:
- 28 2-bed and 32 1-bed, independent living, residential units set over a mix of 3 to 4 storeys
- Restaurant and lounge facilities, which will be open to the local community
- Hobbies, Well-being, hairdressers and kiosk/shop, which will be open to the local community
- Staff zone incorporating welfare/meeting room
- Car parking and covered cycle racks
The planning application was granted with conditions at Development Control Committee on 28 October 2008.
The contractor Inspace Partnerships Ltd took possession of the site in February 2009. Initial enabling works were completed by May 2009 and construction of the building has commenced. The development is scheduled to be completed by August 2010 and due to open in September 2010, to be known as Knaves Court.
Housing 21 will be recruiting various staff to deliver services at the new facility, which will be advertised in June 2010, both on the Housing 21 website and locally.
