Walsall Gigaport / office corridor

giga port

A planning application has recently been approved for a new, commercially anchored, central business development for the Littleton Street/ Blue Lane corridor, proposing the creation of a series of high quality, sustainable office developments designed to meet the evolving needs of business and enterprise in the 21st Century. The Office Corridor has the potential over time to create up to 3,200 jobs, retain and attract new commercial enterprises to the town and establish Walsall and the West Midlands as a leader in the operation and development of IT related services. The masterplan consent is for 127,000 sqm of office space, a data centre, a hotel with conference facilities, 23,000 sqm of live/work space, a health and sports facility, and retail/non-retail floorspace.

Phase One of the Office Corridor will see the creation of the Walsall Gigaport, which includes a ‘Walsall Hub’ data centre, a Business Centre comprising offices and incubator units, the ‘One Gigaport’ office complex, and intervening public spaces. A key feature will be the use of ‘next generation broadband’ and fibre optic technology to encourage the development of innovative start-up companies, and provide national and international connectivity to IT-based industries, through the Walsall Hub. There will also be a ‘green’ data centre and incubator units.

It is anticipated that Phase One will create 635 jobs and that the data and business centres will be operational by 2011.
