One-to-one support for deafblind people
Communicator – Guide Service
One-to-one support may be offered following assessment to deafblind people with specialist communication, access to information and mobility needs.
A Communicator – Guide is a human enabler, acting as the "eyes and ears" of the deafblind person. They are trained to a specific, high standard in various communication methods and guiding.
The guides work on a one-to-one basis with the deafblind person, helping them to communicate effectively with other people, access written and environmental information and increase mobility through escorting them to different locations.
Tasks may include:
- assistance in dealing with correspondence and bills
- escorting person to groups, friends, shopping, hairdressers, medical appointments
- accompanying the person to facilitate communication
Voluntary Befriending Service
Services for Deafblind People recruit and support local people who are prepared to spend a few hours of their free time befriending a deafblind person.
A volunteer may be provided to help to relieve isolation. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, further details are available here.
