Older people and fall prevention

Falls prevention in older people is a priority. The risk of falls increases with age and as the UK population is an ageing population this indicates a major problem. So there is no surprise that falls are the most common fatal accident to older people.

FACTS

  • Most accidents to older people involving hospital treatment are due to falls
  • Fractures are the most common injury when older people fall
  • People over 65 have a 1 in 3 chance of falling in the next year
  • Someone who has suffered a stroke is twice as likely to have a serious fall
  • Women are twice as likely to fall as men
  • Most falls occur at home
  • 2000 people over 65 die as a result as a home accident

There are many reasons why people fall and they can be intrinsic (to do with the persons health or fitness) or extrinsic factors (the physical or social environment). It may be due to both. Age related changes, medical problems and medicines can affect the condition of the person leading to weakness, poor balance and dizziness. This could then affect their ability to cope with their environment so slips, trips and falls become more likely.

Risk Factors to Falling

  • History of falls (3 in the last year)
  • Underlying conditions e.g arthritis, low Blood pressure etc
  • Multiple medication (4 or more)
  • Decrease muscle strength
  • Problems with balance
  • Poor footwear and care
  • Sensory impairment
  • Mental Health Problems
  • Inadequate diet
  • Lifestyle factors e.g. inactivity, alcohol
  • External environment e.g. clutter, rugs and wires, poor lighting causing tripping.

The good news is that exercise is indicated to prevent falls!! But only a limited number of people take enough exercise to maintain their functional independence.

However it is not too late to start exercising! Physical activity can delay the deterioration of functional capacity in older people. Physical activity can help combat heart disease, muscular tension, joint pain and osteoporosis. It can improve circulation, stimulate digestion, and aid sleep. It also heightens alertness, increases self confidence and alleviates depression.

EXTEND is an exercise to music programme. Clients who may find the sessions of benefit include

  • clients who have experienced a fall and may be following a rehabilitation programme to reduce the risk of further falls
  • clients who have concerns about falling and wish to prevent an initial fall
  • clients who have lower mobility levels and would like to become more active
  • individuals who wish to increase their activity levels and meet new people

Alongside the exercise element, the instructor will also carry out information sessions focusing upon the risk factors for falling and how an individual can reduce their risk through simple changes to their lifestyle. These sessions are very informative and small changes can lead to a reduced risk of falling.

For more information see the EXTEND page located on this website.
