Mayor of Walsall councillor Melvin Pitt will today open four days of celebrations to mark the achievements of borough children.
Councillor Pitt will join a carnival procession of more than 100 schoolchildren representing more than 50 nursery, primary, secondary and special schools, who will parade from the Civic Square at 10am to Gallery Square Parade at The New Art Gallery to open the My Walsall, My Future celebrations.
Councillor Pitt said: “I think we should be rightly proud of the tremendous achievements of our young people across the borough.
“They are a credit to Walsall and I hope people turn out in force, whatever the weather, to cheer them on and join in the celebrations.”
The mayor will be accompanied on the day by his daughter and Mayoress of Walsall Abi Pitt, herself a student in the borough at Pool Hayes School.
The procession will feature shopping trolleys transformed into colourful animals by pupils as well as costumes, masks banners and colourful streamers and will be accompanied by drummers.
After the official opening, primary schoolchildren will be performing in a marquee in Gallery Square from 10.30am-2.30pm and at the same times on Wednesday with secondary schools represented at the Civic Square at the same times on Wednesday.
Nursery and foundation children will be enjoying sculpture, planting, nature trails and den building at the Arboretum from 10.30am-2.30pm on Thursday and Friday.
Councillor Pitt will also be hosting a reception in the mayor’s parlour to welcome guests for Thursday night’s Diversity in Walsall concert at the town hall.
The all-ticket concert will feature Castle School’s Djembe Drums, Walsall Junior and Youth Choirs and Alex Cattell - Young Musician of the Year among the attractions.
