National Indicators Set (NIS)

The new National Indicator Set replaces the Best Value Performance Indictors as from April 2008.

All effective organisations measure their performance to identify improvement. The new NIS contains 25 indicators that are to be determined by measuring citizen’s views and perspectives collected through a single 'Place Survey' to be administered through all local authorities.

The NIS will be the only set of indicators on which central government will performance manage local government, replacing all other existing sets of indicators including Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPIs) and Performance Assessment Framework (PAF) indicators from 1 April 2008.

The Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) has published the final Handbook of Definitions for the new National Indicator Set.
