Through a series of Workshops and fun activities the Neighbourhood Watch, West Midlands Police and Your School, working in partnership, will deliver a community project to young people in Year 5 or 6. The focus of the project is to show how young people can help reduce crime, be safe and play an active part in the Community. The sessions are scheduled for 45 minutes, to fit in with school lesson programmes and can be delivered within, or outside the school day.
The programme is scheduled for 5 weekly sessions, but can be adapted to suit the school programmes. The sessions ideally involve class teachers, local liaison police officers and/or PCSOs and the Neighbourhood Watch.
The sessions are scheduled as follows:
Objective - by the end of the first workshop children will understand the concept of Neighbourhood Watch, Neighbourhood Policing and crimes that affect young people by:
Objective - by the end of this Workshop children will know how to take simple and practical steps to help protect their property and home against crime. Additionally through a series of drama situations they will experience a number of “What If” situations that will help develop a “Never assume it won’t happen to you” attitude.
Objective - by the end of this Workshop children will develop a short Power Point or other form of presentation around the concept of Personal Safety.
Objective - children will have the opportunity to complete, present and discuss their safety presentations.
Objective - through discussion and fun exercises children will learn about responsibility in the community, what to do if they witness a crime and what might happen to them if they are involved in crime.
The activities described can provide teachers with a series of citizenship lessons aimed at making pupils more aware of their contributions to society by the choices that they make.
