Coaching Disabled Performers

By the end of this workshop coaches should be able to:

  • Explain when integration and segregation might be most appropriate
  • Identify appropriate safety and medical considerations
  • Review and extend your knowledge of how to adapt your coaching to the specific needs of disabled performers
  • Design and monitor a programme for a disabled player taking part in their sport
  • Direct players to appropriate structures for competition and further coaching

Develop your own coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled players through inclusive and separate coaching sessions. Discover new ways to adapt equipment and identify appropriate safety and medical considerations to meet your players’ needs.

By the end of this workshop coaches should be able to:

  • Explain what sports equity means and why it is important
  • Identify barriers to participation
  • Use appropriate language and terminology
  • Identify and challenge inequitable behaviour
  • Interpret the legal framework that affects coaching
  • Identify how they can become more equitable
  • Establish where to go for further information

Everyone should have access to sport, regardless of gender, age, race, ability, faith or sexual orientation. As a coach, you have an important role to play in ensuring this happens. The workshop will help you to apply and extend your existing skills to meet the needs of present and potential participants.

Good Practice and Child Protection

By the end of this workshop coaches should be able to:

  • Identify coaching practice and sport situations that might constitute poor practice and/or abuse
  • Recognise key principles of code of conduct and their application to good coaching practice
  • Recognise truths and myths surrounding child abuse
  • Identify ways of dealing with their own feelings about child abuse
  • Describe what constitutes abuse and identify the indicators
  • Recognise signs and symptoms
  • Identify appropriate action if a child discloses he/she has been abused
  • Identify appropriate action if concerned about the behaviour of another coach or colleague
  • Identify appropriate action if concerned about the behaviour of a parent/carer (ie outside of the sports arena)
  • Review practice that reduces the likelihood of wrongful allegations and of abuse occurring

Protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and following good coaching practice. Learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you have concerns.

The FUNdamentals of Movement Workshop

3 Hours – Practical based

This practical workshop explores the concepts of Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and speed.  It compliments other coach education resources which may focus on the movement skills of running, hopping, skipping etc.  This workshop assists coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within their sessions whether multi skill or sport specific.  

By the end of this workshop session coaches will be familiar with the fundamental concepts related to agility, balance, co-ordination and speed (the ABC’s).

  • Agility - dynamic stability, starting and stopping, momentum, acceleration, rhythm
  • Balance - establishing a stable core, static stability, exploring centre gravity and base of support
  • Coordination - related to disassociating body parts and the coordination of explosive actions including jumping, throwing, striking and kicking.

A pre-requisite for this workshop is that coaches should have an understanding of the Long Term Athlete Development Model and associated player pathway within their sport.

F.A. Courses and Workshops for Football Clubs.

Clubs affiliated to the Football Association (F.A.) will need to attend F.A. recognised courses and workshops. The following courses are available:

Child Protection and Best Practice

For all coaches, medics and referees in football where youngsters are involved, including where Under 18s are playing adult football. For those involved with Charter Standard or taking coaching, medical and refereeing qualifications, Child protection and best practice is mandatory.

Pre-requisites:

Ideally applicants are 18 years of age or over. The workshop requires some emotional maturity to deal with content, as well as some experience in leadership roles in order to apply a context for dealing with child welfare issues.

Effective Football Club Administration.

The Effective Football Club Administration programme (EFCA), set up by the FA and Sport England, aims to develop administration at grassroots football clubs.

What is EFCA?

It is a programme of seven workshops for club administrators aimed at increasing the effectiveness of club officials within grassroots football. In essence, it is a guide on how to run your club.

FA Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Disabled Footballer

Any coach who is 16 years of age or over and has successfully passed the FA Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football

Course Content:

The Coaching Disabled Footballers course is designed to give football coaches and teacher’s ideas and practices for the inclusion of disabled players in football sessions within mainstream or impairment specific sessions. The course is six hours and covers both theory and practical elements, by the end of the workshop each participant should be able to met the following outcomes:

  • Apply & extend your existing coaching skills and experience to meet the needs of players with a range of impairments
  • Use appropriate terminology
  • Explain the benefits and problems of integrated and segregated sessions for different disability groups
  • Establish basic communication skills for coaching disabled footballers
  • Identify appropriate safety and medical considerations
  • Explain appropriate structures for competition (including rule adaptations and classification systems)
  • Plan a wide range of coaching sessions for disabled footballers
  • Using the Inclusion Spectrum, plan your coaching sessions to include disabled players or provide alternative appropriate opportunities
  • Understand the player pathways available for disabled players including the appropriate structure for competition

There is no assessment for this course. All candidates will receive a certificate of attendance
