Dance
Sport and Leisure Development Services are always seeking new funding opportunities in order to develop projects that will benefit the health and well being of the residents of Walsall. The current Communities Investment Funding from Sport England and The Lottery allowed for the development of Walsall Dance Festival in 2009.
Walsall Dance Festival 2009
The festival was a showcase event held in Walsall on 14 November 2009, where groups participating in the festival could demonstrate their dance skills and abilities and advertise directly to the people of Walsall. After the festival the participating groups offered free taster sessions for a two week period. Five hundred free taster sessions where offered and just over 150 free places where taken up over the two week period. The free taster sessions where specifically marketed towards adults in order to increase physical activity levels and using dance as a fun way to do this.
Dance effectively improves health and well being as it:
- Allows people to make new friends
- Improves health
- Improves community spirit
- and is a fun way to exercise
Walsall Dance Development Group
The festival also created the Walsall Dance Development Group. The main aim of the Development group is to act as a platform for dance across the Walsall borough promoting opportunities for funding, partnership working and advice to dance groups. Walsall Dance Development Group equally supports schools, colleges, community and private dance schools.
