Physical Activity for Cardiac Enhancement (PACE) Programme
This is a programme of specialised community based activity sessions aimed at clients who have either experienced a cardiac episode or may have risk factors or coronary heart disease such as high blood pressure or cholesterol, diabetes, may be overweight or have a family history of coronary heart disease.
The aim is to provide regular sessions to enable clients to increase their levels of physical activity in order to benefit their health and either help reduce or manage their condition.
The programme was developed by the Health and Fitness Team along with Walsall Heartcare in order to fill a gap in services that meant that clients were unable to participate in the majority of physical activity opportunities across the borough. The sessions also form the final phase of the cardiac rehabilitation programme that aims to support long-term maintenance of positive lifestyles.
The sessions follow a circuit or gym based format designed specifically so each client can work at their own level and new clients are able to join the sessions at any point. Sessions are closely supervised and have a maximum of 15 clients per session.
The programme is led by experienced advanced level instructors who have successfully completed the national BACR Phase IV qualification. www.bacrphaseiv.co.uk
The sessions are delivered in local community venues and we currently have sessions running in Bloxwich, Palfrey, Shelfield and Willenhall.
Specific inclusion criteria has been developed for the programme based upon national BACR guidelines to ensure that clients are suitable to access the scheme and will benefit from the sessions. These have also been developed with recommendations from Heartcare and BACR instructors to ensure that the programme works well within Walsall.
