EXTEND

EXTEND is an exercise to music programme for clients who are either over the age of sixty or who have experienced a fall or experiencing mobility problems.

The programme has been developed as part of Walsall tPCT’s Falls Programme and is delivered by  Sport and Leisure Development Services.

The sessions aim to:

  • Increase mobility and independence
  • Improve strength, stamina, posture and co-ordination
  • Provide a fun, social environment to decrease isolation
  • Provide information and support on addressing the issues surrounding falls

Clients who may find the sessions of benefit include:

  • clients who have experienced a fall and may be following a rehabilitation programme to reduce the risk of further falls
  • clients who have concerns about falling and wish to prevent an initial fall
  • clients who have lower mobility levels and would like to become more active
  • individuals who wish to increase their activity levels and meet new people

The sessions are usually about an hour in length and follow a group format. They can be done seated or standing depending upon each client’s mobility levels. The individual exercises can be tailored by the instructor to meet a client’s specific needs.

All sessions are delivered by instructors who have experience in working with the target age group and hold the national EXTEND qualification.

Alongside the exercise element, the instructor will also carry out information sessions focusing upon the risk factors for falling and how an individual can reduce their risk through simple changes to their lifestyle.
