The future

After consultations, we are proud to introduce our Masterplan for the Arboretum. Please visit our Arboretum Masterplan page for more information.

Walsall Council is committed to providing you with a park we can all be proud of. In order to do this, a Stage 1 application was submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund, Parks for People programme in March 2007 and subsequently resubmitted following feedback in September 2007.

This application received a Stage 1 ‘pass’ in March 2008 bringing the Arboretum Restoration Programme one step closer to reality.  A Stage 2 application will be submitted in March 2009 and providing it is successful, a three year restoration programme will be delivered Autumn 2009- Autumn 2012, to carry out all of the improvements detailed within the Masterplan.

Our aim is to restore the original Victorian character of the Arboretum. We want to focus on some of the early features within the park and restore them to their former glory. However, we also want to take account of their place in a modern 21st century community recreation facility… your Arboretum!

The project will consider the ‘features’ and facilities’ original and intended functions, but will also reflect on their use today and their possible role in the future.

As part of the restoration process we will also be reviewing staffing levels within the Arboretum.  Included within the lottery bid are proposals for three new members of staff:

A Project Manager to run the restoration project; a dedicated Arboretum Parks Manager and an Arboretum Head Ranger, to assist both the Project Manager and the Parks Manager.

Please see our proposals page which describes our masterplan and the intended restoration programme in more detail.
