Having a break

Many people with a learning disability live with their family. Sometimes it helps for people and their families to get a break from each other. This helps them to do different things and meet new people. It also helps people to use facilities in the community and to attend activities that they would not normally attend with someone other than a family member.  Therefore, it increases independence and promotes choice and inclusion.

There are a number of ways that people can have a break. These include:

  • having support workers to help them to go out and do something they like, for instance go for a swim, visit the cinema, go to the disco;
  • having a support worker to stay with someone in their home while their carer goes out;
  • staying overnight with another family in an adult placement scheme;
  • staying overnight in a residential or nursing home.

For more information on how we are planning to give people more breaks read the 'Getting Away From It All' report. You can read this on the Strategies and plans page.

If you would like to talk about having a break then please contact one of the learning disabilities teams.
