Jobseekers with disabilities

Disability Symbol

Walsall Council has been awarded the 'Disability Symbol' which is a recognition by Jobcentre Plus to employers who have agreed to meet fiveDisability symbol commitments regarding the recruitment, employment, retention and the career development of disabled people. Walsall Council has signed up these five commitments relating to the employment of people with disabilities.

Commitment one

To interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities.

Commitment two

Consulting employees with a disability:

To ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what you and they can do to make sure they can develop and use their abilities.

Commitment three

Retaining people who become disabled:

To make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment.

Commitment four

Developing awareness:

To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make your commitments work.

Commitment five

Reviewing progress and keeping people informed:

Each year, to review the five commitments and what has been achieved, to plan ways to improve on them and to let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.

Increasing accessibility

In an endeavour to constantly improve accessibility to its recruitment service by disabled people, Walsall Council has introduced the following process/service improvements:

  • Vacancies now appear on our website at www.walsall.gov.uk/jobshop
  • Application forms can be requested online or downloaded
  • Vacancy bulletins are available in large print formats
  • Application forms and vacancy bulletins are available on audio tape
  • A curriculum vitae will not be accepted, however if you have a disability that means you cannot easily complete an application form, then we will accept your application in some other suitable medium, i.e., on audio tape

Customers should note that with appropriate notice individual job descriptions and employee specifications can be made available on audio tape and in large print format.
