Family centres
There are three family centres in Walsall: Dale Street Family Centre in Palfrey, Teddesley Street Family Centre in the Butts and Stroud Avenue Family Centre, in Short Heath , Willenhall.
All three family centres provide a range of services to children ‘in need’ and their families. Children will have been identified as ‘in need’ as the result of a social care and supported housing assessment. Family centres will accept referrals in relation to children age 0 to 12.
Services provided
Parenting Capacity Assessments
The family centre will undertake this assessment on behalf of a social worker who has responsibility for completing a detailed core assessment in relation to a child and their family.
Outreach Support
Advice and support to parents/carers on any aspect of parenting, such as behaviour management, play and stimulation, household routines and budgeting.
Direct Work with children
Family centre workers will work with children where social workers have identified a particular need. The two main types of work they do are:
Keep Safe work
A preventive piece of work with children who may have been in vulnerable situations, to help them to know what to do if they feel unsafe.
Child’s Wishes and Feelings
To help the social worker to gain an understanding of how a child sees their situation, their position in their family and what they might wish for in the future.
Group work with parents
All 3 family centres provide a range of groups designed to assist and support parents/carers in developing their skills. They run groups on the following areas:
- behaviour management
- parenting skills
- play
- assertiveness for women.
Unlike all the other services, which require a referral to social care and supported housing, groups are open to all parents. Any professional can refer and parents can refer themselves.
