Grain weevils

Facts about grain beetles and weevils

Grain weevil2
  • Grain beetles are mainly found where food has been stored for a long time.
  • They attack such foods as cereals, flour, biscuit mixes, macaroni, dried meat and fruits.

Recognising a grain beetle

Grain weevil

The beetles are oval shaped, dark brown in colour and about 3-4mm long and shiny in appearance.

What you can do

  • Remove all dishes and food from cabinets.
  • The beetles need to be killed before you throw out the foodstuffs as they will reinfest.
  • Foodstuffs stored in paper, waxed paper, metal and some glass containers can go in the oven for 1 hour at 135 degrees Fahrenheit or in the freezer at 0 degrees fahrenheit for 6 days to kill all stages of the beetle.
  • Store food in containers with tight fitting lids.

Service the council provides

We offer a free identification service. You will need to catch the insect, seal it securely in a clear plastic container labelled with your name, address and phone number.

You should then take it to: Environmental Health, Challenge Building, Hatherton Road, Walsall, WS1 1YG.

Our qualified pest officers will identify it and let you know what it is.  We recommend that you treat for grain weevils yourself as the council does not provide a service for the treatment of this pest type.
