Sites of Special Scientific Interest
What is a SSSI?
Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are notified under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and subsequent amending legislation, on land of special interest by reason of its flora, fauna, geological or physiographical features.
Site of Special Scientific Interest status gives protection against listed damaging operations. These sites also receive protection through national and local planning policy. Sites are identified and notified by Natural England. Each notification is made to relevant landowners and the council.
Each notification consists of:
- A plan of the site
- A description of the scientific interest
- A list of the damaging operations that cannot be carried out without the permission of Natural England.
