Bridge Street/Ablewell Street Townscape Heritage Initiative

What is the Bridge Street/Ablewell Street Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI)?

Bridge Street in the 1950s

This £1.1million initiative aims to regenerate an area of Walsall through offering grants to repair, restore and reuse its historic buildings. It will not only improve the area's physical environment but also assist the local economy.

View a map of the Bridge Street/Ablewell Street THI (PDF 503KB). The area covered by the Bridge Street/Ablewell Street THI is outlined in red and includes parts of the Lichfield Street Conservation Area, Church Hill Conservation Area and Bridge Street Conservation Area.

The Bridge Street/Ablewell Street Townscape Heritage Initiative is being funded by Walsall Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and Advantage West Midlands until 2011.

Grants for your building

Who can apply?

If you are a building owner with either a freehold interest or a leasehold interest with at least ten years left to run you can apply for a grant. The property that you want a grant for must be within the Bridge Street/Ablewell Street THI area.

What grants are available?

You can apply for a grant for:

  • Building repairs - up to 70% of the total cost of this work may be covered by a grant. This grant is for the structural and the external repair of the building, for example, repairs to roofs, brickwork, stonework, shopfronts, windows, render, chimneys and rainwater goods.
  • Putting back architectural details that have been lost over time - up to 90% of the total cost of this work may be covered by a grant. Examples of eligible work include reinstating authentic shopfronts, windows, decorative stonework and rainwater goods.
  • Work to bring vacant floorspace back into use - for example, vacant floors above shops and empty shops. The grants for this are decided using the conservation deficit calculation. Please speak to the THI project manager for more information.

Professional fees and VAT that is not reclaimable may also be covered by a grant at the same percentage as the associated works.

How to apply for a grant

  • You must apply before you start work; grants will not be offered retrospectively
  • Talk to the THI project officer for advice on what works are eligible and to arrange a site visit if necessary
