Moat cottages Moated Site, Great Barr
This is the remains of a homestead (a house adjacent to a moat), dating from at least the eighteenth century. The house was pulled down in the late 1870's, leaving the moat unfilled.
Originally the house was half-timbered (not black and white though), and for the later part of its life, only one end of the building was inhabited, leaving the rest to go to ruin. The southern end of the house was the oldest part, being half timbered, with the northern end of the house being a more 'modern' farmhouse. The orignal building was said to have been constructed by the Knights Templar.
Surviving remains include the wide rectangular moat, measuring about 300ft by 290 ft, and a brick bridge crossing it. The remains of gate posts could still be seen at the beginning of the twentieth century.
